POWER Struggle Cheat Sheet
Created as the companion resource to Episode 4 of Middle School Mayhem™, How to End a Power Struggle Without Giving In, the POWER Cheat Sheet helps you stop participating in the argument without surrendering the expectation. Because ending the argument and giving in are not the same thing.
The POWER Framework gives you five practical moves for those moments when a simple direction turns into a back-and-forth battle:
P- Pause Your Part: Stop automatically adding another response.
O- Own the Expectation: Get clear about what you expect and the consequence if it isn’t met.
W- Watch Out for the Back-and-Forth: Recognize when you’re no longer solving the problem you’re arguing about the argument.
E- End the Exchange: Know when there’s nothing productive left to add.
R- Release the Need to Win: Let go of needing agreement, an apology, or the last word.
This 2-page printable gives you a quick-reference guide to the complete POWER Framework plus a planning worksheet to help you prepare for one of those predictable, everyday struggles before it happens again.
You’ll identify your own part in the pattern, clarify the expectation and consequence, anticipate the back-and-forth, create a phrase for ending the exchange, and consider what you may need to release when you feel yourself trying to “win.”
This isn't about letting your middle schooler do whatever they want. It's about learning to hold the line without feeding the battle and modeling the kind of healthy communication you ultimately want your child to learn.
The boundary can stay. The argument doesn’t have to.
